Students,
This week you may write about any subject that interests you. Take us on an adventure to a far away place, real or imaginary, by using strong verbs and vivid adjectives. Describe a scene or a person in colorful language to bring us up close to the setting or character. Or, craft a poem with carefully chosen words that paint pictures in our minds. It’s up to you!
Use at least 75 words to write your story, poem, letter or description. As always, do your work in a word processing program first. (MSWord can help you count your words.) Edit your work before copying and pasting it into the comment area of the blog. Don’t forget to include your first name and code. You may post your writing on your own blog this week if you prefer. (The paragraph you just read has 70 words. Don't be intimidated by the number. You can do it!)
Happy writing!

“ Christmas Night!”
By: Hailey W. SW#26
I was teary eyed while I was sitting by the fireside, drinking a cup of hot cocoa. I had gotten in a fight with my mom on Christmas Eve. She told me that if I kept whining about wearing my Santa dress to grandma’s house, I might get lumps of coal in my stocking instead of an American Girl Doll. I started too whimper even more. The more I thought about it the more I whimpered. I decided that I would pick up a good book to put my mind on something else. Suddenly, I fell into a deep sleep. A few hours later I woke up and I saw Billion’s of red and green presents with gold bows on them. And saw 5 with my name on them!!! But wait I thought. Did I still get coal in my stocking? I toke baby steps and started real slow for my stocking. I peered over the red and gold trim and saw…
An American Girl Doll!!! “Yes! I got it!” I shrieked. I made my self really quite I didn’t want mom too know I peeked into my stocking before everyone else did!

Dear Mme Powell,
For my homework I thought I’d do a story about horses.
This Story will be fascinating!! (I hope)
Just about a week ago, Slicer ( a brand new horse, 2 years old) galloped all the way to Lochloy Mt and back. My owner, Robby told him he can’t come to Florida this summer and that is why I’m stuck in this mess!! I’m Siro and I’ve been at this ranch for about 6 years. Right now I am 14 years old and I’ll explain why I am telling you this story. When I heard that Slicer couldn’t come to Florida, as chief of this Ranch I had to sacrifice my time in Florida for Slicer. You see, Slicer was always a tricky Horse, but he is still apart of our group. Saran, our beautiful Mare told me “ Listen Siro, this horse is having a hard time fitting in here, so I want you to become friends with him. You are so amazingly awesome. I know you will do the right thing” Know she was out of breath.
So I did it for Saran. And this horse is driving me nuts!!! Nuts, I tell you Nuts!

Last night I got new Nike skateboarding shoes and a new snowboarding helmet for my birthday. I got to try the snowboarding helmet out on Saturday. I got to try the new Nike Skateboarding shoes at a different time on Saturday. I caught huge air off the super kicker at Highlands ski and snowboard area. The jump is about 30 feet of clearing and super steep. The new skateboarding shoes were tried out at the skate park called the Renegade in Owatonna. I had a blast at the Renegade and Highlands.

Once I went sledding at Braemar golf course . I saw a path. It was huge. I sad “ Lets go up that path” and Kevin sad “ yes’. So we went up the path and we saw a big , big hill with tons of mini trees. I sad “ you want to go on it “ and he sad “ yes” . So we went up the hill (it was hard to get up the hill) we went down a couple of times . After there was a cliff tip thing. Kevin sad “ you want to go off of the mini cliff tip thing” and I sad” yes”

My favorite Baseball player is Justin Morneau. Why? Because he is healthy, athletic, a great hitter and a great fielder. But last year he didn’t quiet have as good of a year. I think it was just because he was not playing with very good players last year. He won a MVP award last year. He was just one of the players that won an award, Joe Mauer American league batting title. I’m kind of disappointed with the Twin’s trades. They traded Jason Bartlett [Short Stop] and Matt Garza [pitcher]. Kevin SW6
One day when it was cold, I went to a sledding hill called Browndale Park. When we got there me and my sister Bryanna and her friend Kira got out the car and we started to run to the hill. Then when we got up to the hill, we immediately went down the hill. After a few of hours, we stopped sledding, but then we decided to go down again and my stomach started to hurt after a few minutes. I start to throw up none stop for a minute or two. Then my sister had to call home and when my dad got there, I got home, I lay in bed, and they knew I had the flu.

The Best Ever Camping Trip
Last summer I went on a camping trip with my dad, Molly and her dad. We had lots of fun things planned like canoeing, swimming, and biking. When we got to the camp site we set up the tent and decided to go biking. The next day we decided to go canoeing, biking, and swimming. First we went biking for 20 miles and stopped to have a picnic in the middle. At the end of our long but fun bike ride, we got ice cream! Then we went canoeing. Along the way we had treats and water. Then we took a break and got out of the canoe and went swimming in the river. The water was murky brown but fun. When we got back in the canoe my dad and I hit a tree sticking up in the river and we tipped the canoe up on my end. I went flying in the air and fell off my seat into the bottom of the canoe! After canoeing, we went in our cabin and got ready for bed, set out folding chairs, watched shooting stars and saw the big dipper. During the night there was a huge storm, the tent stakes flew up ,a tree fell down, there was lighting ,thunder boomed and my dad said it was the biggest storm you could imagine !...and guess what, I was still asleep!

Costa Rica
After we landed on a BuMpY surface, we got out of the plane. There were three people, two men and one woman. She greeted us with open arms and we dashed down the trail to go to bed. That night seemed to last for centuries. The next day we zipped down to the tide pools to see all the sea critters. After the tide came whooshing in, we went boogy boarding. Then a girl about my age asked if she could boogy board with me. After that we zipped to lunch. They served us beet salad and noodles. The girl popped down next to me and said her name was Alana. When we hopped up to leave, we saw a toucan. A guy said her name was Sam. He called her over to us. We got to pet and feed Sam
That was the best vacation ever!
When I grow up, I want to be a fashion designer for newborn babies. If I owned a company it would be called Fashion for Babies. The store would be located in Vail, Colorado because I like skiing. I would like to sell warm and fluffy ski jackets, pants, mittens, and hats. The maximum time for shipping would be two days…everything would arrive in time for the occasion. Everyone will rush to my store to buy excellent clothes for their cute newborn babies!

My little sister Margrethe
Spunky and cute,
Small and sweet,
She the one you’d want to meet.
Funny and lovable,
Very much huggable,
And so very, very snuggle-able.
Her bright blue eyes,
Shine so bright,
You could see them in the dead of night.
Big dimples,
Big smiles,
In fact lots of big heaping piles.
So that’s a small bit of my sister,
Just so you know she not a mister.
Just like people need us, we need each other. Animals that are old, lost, has no happiness, no family, no love, they all have the same feeling that we have. Like the kids in adoption centers they too have no family, probably no happiness or love in there life, and if there old too. Most parents like to go for the young in kids, but we need to go for the young, the old and the disabled. It’s the same for animals they all need that, too. And we are the ones that can fix all of that.
There is more to all of this, even if you can’t adopt you can still help. For example a story on miracle pets there was a woman who had taken pets into her home who were found on the street hurt or lost and took care of them till they were found a home. We can all do something like that. We can rescue them from a fire if they can’t get out and the only way for them to be safe is to save them yourself. This happened for a husband and wife with there three dogs. The woman’s husband ran into the burning to fire to save them. They didn’t come out for a long time. She was about to run in to, but the fireman stopped her and said “Don’t, we can replace the dogs but we can’t replace you.” The man and his dogs came out safely. But the main reason of this story was that the fireman was wrong, you can never replace someone you love because everyone if different in their own way and you can’t replace that. Also the dogs needed him because we are the only people who can save them from their misery, like a burning fire.
So remember these people and what they have done. You can follow them in their footsteps and help the animals in need. It will help them and the world around you.

My trip to Lutsen.
Last summer I went to Lutsen with my family. It was colder up there beacause we were on Lake Superior!
Our cousins came all the way from Dallas Texas! I bet they thought it was super cold!
We fished a lot together and went to the "fish days" parade in Grand Marais. Then we had pizza for lunch at Sven and Ole's!
After that we went to an ice cream place and had ice cream and I had strawberry chocolate swirl. Tt tasted exhilerating!
When we were all done we went home to our cabins and slept a lot after a busy day.

Dear Ms. Powell,
This winter break, my family and I went to New Orleans, Louisiana. When we were at the airport, we could not find one of our suitcases. And then on the loud speaker they told my parents to come to the front desk. We found out that our luggage hadn’t arrived and we would get it the next day. (That luggage had all our clothes.) Then we went to rent a car. We drove to a hotel called Best Western. It was probably 10:00 p.m. already. We didn’t have any pajamas to wear but we had extra clothing because my mom always worries about getting stranded somewhere, so she always tells us to bring an extra pair of clothes. I changed into those clothes and then I fell asleep right away.
The next day, we went to French Quarter and saw some musicians playing jazz music in the street and we gave some money to them. Then we went to the Imax theater to learn more about hurricane Katrina. It was sad to see what hurricane Katrina had done to many people. Then my dad and I went to an aquarium and saw some really big turtles, stingrays, and sharks.
The next day, we went to see the area where Brad Pitt was working to build new houses for people who lost their houses from Katrina (but we didn’t see Brad Pitt himself). All of the structures were covered with pink plastic (a/k/a tarp) to protect them from the rain and wind.
On New Year’s Eve day, we drove to Mississippi and Alabama. In Alabama, we went to Dauphin Island, which was named after a French family. I found very pretty seashells. It was so crowded back in New Orleans because of the Sugar Bowl (it was a big football game between Georgia and Hawaii, and Georgia won).
On New Year’s Day, I was so excited because my family said that we could go on a carriage mule ride through the city. The name of the mule is Mohammed Ali, who is a famous boxer. They use mules to give rides because horses and ponies could not stand the hot weather. We had dinner at a restaurant named “Bubba Gump” and it was all about the movie Forrest Gump. We went to a café called Café du Monde. We ate delicious square French donuts with powdered sugar called beignets.
The last day we were there, we went to the French Quarter again to see Brad Pitt’s house. It didn’t look like a movie star’s house. Afterwards, we drove to Baton Rouge, which is the capital of Louisiana. We went to the capitol building and that was where Huey Long was shot many years ago. He was the governor of Louisiana and a U.S. senator. The capitol building is the tallest in the country, and there were 31 floors, I think. We saw a magnificent view outside, but it was so windy so we had to go inside. We had a fabulous winter vacation.

I’m telling you about someone who’s special to me. He’s not your average grandfather. From his stories of adventures as very young man, I have found his life very interesting.
My grandfather was born and grew up in Pennsylvania. When the bomb struck Pearl Harbor, he tried to enlist at the age of 14 but his mother refused to sign. When he was old enough (16) he enrolled in the Navy. While he served our country he traveled to the Philippines, Russia and other places!
These are not the only reasons I love my grandfather. He is kind, helpful, loving, strong. These are some of the reasons he is special to me. Thomas j21
