Week 5 Kindness!

Dear Students,
First of all, I am really happy to see the great effort you are putting into writing comments each week. Good work so far, fourth graders! This week, you will be writing about a true experience. If there are fellow students involved, please do not identify them by name to avoid embarassing anyone.
Sincerely,
Mme Powell

Last week Normandale fourth graders participated in a fun day-long retreat all about kindness!

Choose one of these two ideas to write about:
1.) Think of a time when someone was kind to you. How did you feel before they showed you kindness? How did you feel afterward? OR
2.) Think of a time when you showed kindness to someone else? How did you feel before and after? How did the other person react?

Write a short story about one of these times. Besides telling what happened be sure to include words that express your feelings about it. Feeling words will help the reader to connect to your story.

Challenge: Choose to do three specific kind things this week! What would make someone else's day brighter?

  • As always, please write your answer in complete sentences using correct capitalization and punctuation.
  • You may find it easier to write your ideas in a Word document and then paste them into a comment on this blog.
  • Be sure to include your first name ONLY and your homeroom number (e.g. J17) before publishing your comment.

Comments must be posted no later than 8:00 A.M. Monday, October 15, to receive full credit.

Dear Ms.Powell,
Once at my other school,(Because I'm new this year)Someone was teasing somebody and that person was a bully. That bully had been bullying everybody. So...... I stood up myself infront of a bully, and I said "You know what, that's not very nice at all." And the bully looked at me right in the eye and said "You're not nice either!" And I went to the person who had been teased, and I comforted her. And she thanked me. And the bully learned a lesson. And I was very happy that day and I became friends with the bully.

Once I was lost on a lake
with a friend in a paddel boat
and we didn't have a phone or
a map. So we asked a person(altough
i'm not spose to talk to strangers). They were kind and pointed us in
the right direction.

Dear Mme Powell
Do you know the game read rover? Well I was playing it one day in second grade and it was only with 3 people!! I was one of two people that had someone else run and try to brake thought their arms. So the person said “ready set go “so she ran and she didn’t break thought but she did make me twist and I fell and scraped my knee (really badly). So she said sorry but she didn’t see the blood. When she did she ran off screaming “Ewwwww blood …..” and the other person helped me up and got me too the nurse and helped me walk around stay with me etc.. That I thought was very nice.

Once at a baseball game, I went to get a candy bar. I saw someone drop a dollar, I picked it up and I said " Mame you dropped this , " she said " Oh, thank you." I was feeling good that I had done a good deed. I got in line to get a candy bar. And then the Lady gave me a dollar, she said " Get yourself a popcorn." then I felt really good.

Dear Ms.Powell,
I know I already wrote a blog, but I still thought it would be nice to write one again. I just wanted to say that you should have alot of confidence in every situation. Beacause if you are arguing with someone mean, you should have confidence and stand up for yourself because that is how you can be kind to others by standing up for yourself. I know that sounds weird but.............. I think it is nice. Just help somebody even if you don't know them or if you don't really care for them because it is a nice thing to do. You always want to feel proud and special if you save somebody's day. Here is a common saying that I want to tell you: "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything." Bye-bye.

Once I had just finished a math sheet and almost everybody was already playing and somebody was just starting and they invited me to play and I think if you want to be kind to somebody you can invite them over to play

One time I was with my neighbors and we went up to the younger neighbors house. I asked if they wanted to play hide-and-seek with us. My friends were all 8 and 9 years old and the younger kids were 3 and 5. I suggested that we only play in the front yard, so the little kids could be included. Their front yard does not have a lot of hiding places, so it was easier for the little kids to find us. This must have made the little kids feel important that older kids wanted to play with them and spend time with them. Their mom even said thank you for playing with her children. It made my mom proud.

I time when I showed kindness was when I gave someone a compliment. I felt very good about giving them the compliment. The person that I gave the compliment to was very happy and was very confident in what I complimented him on.

During winter on a snowy day, my friend had no snow boots at recess. You had to have boots to go on the snow or you would have to go on the pavement. It seemed like she had no one to play with. I felt bad for her. I had boots so I went to play with her. I was happy because I made her feel better.

On my first day of kindergarten, I was really scared, until this girl Grace came up to me and said “What is your name?” I looked up at her and replied softly “Siri.” And then she invited me to go play with her. I slowly got up and followed her. We sat down and started to play a game, and the very next day I asked her and some other people to come and play with me. Grace really made my day, and I felt much more comfortable going to school the next day.

One day I got confused, I went on the bus when I was suppose to go to chess club. I didn’t see my mom I said, “where is she?” Then I remembered, my mom said to me one day “if I’m not there go to the neighbor’s house”. I walked over to the neighbor’s house. I rang the doer bell, I herd footsteps, and then I saw my friend. I said, “I think it’s plan B time.” I felt good and safe and a little grounded.

dear mme powell, when I was in kindergarten, the first day,it looked like a jungle in there so I stayed close to my mommy. It seemed so weird because I didn't know anything, so I thought my friends from my preschool class would be there. In the morning I was already all ready, and I was jumping arond like a frog.My mom said"are you ready?'' and I said '' you bet I am''!!! so this girl named jordan came up to me and said ''Let's go color''!!! we were playing like best friends. from this day we still are. She helped me through a tough spot.Sylvia J 24

Once when I went to the Minnesota Lynx lacrosse game with my dad, the players crashed into each other the ball flew out of one players net through the air and into the stands. It was coming right for me and I reached for it but my arms weren't long enough. Then, the guy behind us grabbed the ball before I could see where he was coming from. I thought that I was never going to catch a ball from the stands or even a puck or anything. I was bummed! But then, he looked at me and said, "you need this more than I do" and he handed the ball to me. carterj18

While I was thinking, my eyes were getting droopy. The light was fading. I was falling asleep.
Suddenly, my mom was calling. “COME HERE NOW,” my mom called from the kitchen.
I went to the kitchen. When I got to there, my mom said, “It’s 9:00 pm. Where have you been?”
Before she could finish, I got my old floppy pumpkin costume on. My mom said, “You’re going in that?”

I said, “It’s the only one I have.”

The end
